Day 3 & 4 – Laikipia, Sabuk Lodge, 2 nights

Arrive at at Sabuk, on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in time for a swim in the river or to just enjoy the uninterrupted view across the Laikipia plains. Enjoy an early evening bush sundowner or a short walk from camp, watching the sun set behind the hills. The elusive Greater Kudu and large elephant herds are often seen on these walks.

The Laikipia plateau in central Kenya is perhaps the last stronghold of romantic East Africa – vast open ranches, shadowed by snow-capped Mount Kenya and home to the Laikipia Masai and the Samburu. These indigenous tribes have joined together in partnership with the ranch owners to create a conservation and wildlife haven that spans 800,000 hectares (2 million acres) of wild savannah. Kenya Holiday Importantly Laikipia is home to more endangered mammals than anywhere else in East Africa. Fed by the Ewaso Nyiro and the Ewaso Narok rivers the plateau has long nurtured exceptional diversity.

During your full day at Sabuk you may take guided walks and game drives, ride or walk with the camels, swim in a natural rock pool and enjoy sundowners around the campfire.

Hippos and crocodiles are plentiful in the rivers and the bird life is also abundant. No less than 53 different species of birds of prey alone have been recorded. YOUR GUIDE

The success of every safari depends on the guide and on this safari a friendly, knowledgeable, fun and professional safari guide will ensure that not only do you get on well with your fellow travellers but that you experience the best of African game viewing. Your guide will have an in-depth knowledge of routes, conditions, local attractions and practical mechanics. In addition he will be highly proficient in the identification of the animals and birds of Kenya.

Whilst he will do their very best to ensure that you see a diverse range and good quantity of the wildlife that inhabits the area, it is important to appreciate that guides must follow Concession, Reserve or National Park rules and that they are also sensitive to the needs of the animals.

One of the highlights on this safari is time spent being guided and hosted by a team of traditional Samburu and Laikipiak Masai warriors. They will share their intimate knowledge of the bush and the wildlife, share their culture and explain their traditions and prepare delicious food in a traditional camp kitchen.

ACCOMMODATION

You are bound to be pleased with both the tented camps and the lodges used on this safari – they offer spacious rooms with incredible views of the surrounding plains and the river systems. You will enjoy excellent and varied meals in the stylish lodge dining rooms and by the camp fire under the African sky.
