Kenya Rift Valley and Highlands

Rift valley and highlands:
The Rift valley which is a great African fault, is an enormous scar which traverses from North to South via the eastern half of Africa and the middle East.
Along its huge depression, the earth is patched with extinct or inactive volcanoes alternating with tectonic lakes.

From the Turkana or Rudolf which is in the Northern frontier, to the nations, which is in Tanzania, the Kenyan Rift consists of a string of small lakes including, Baringo, Bogoria, Naivasha, Elementaita, Magadi and Nakuru.

The wide central plateau, the highlands, is divided into two parts by the fault. At the western edge, the Mau Escarpment rises from the Tanzanian limit up to the Cherangani Hills, that border the plateau, which goes up to the Mount Elgon slopes. At the East sector of the Rift, the Aberdare Range is backed by the Ngong Hills, Southwest of Nairobi, and Northward to Laikipia Escarpment.

The Eastern Highlands are influenced by the large and solid Kenya mountain, which in terms of highness, is the second in the whole continent and second to none in the whole country. At its snow heights, there are three prominent peaks. These include Lenana (4,985m), the twin Nelion 95,188m) and Batian (5,199m).

This region consists of the Rift valley province, Central and Nairobi provinces. There are two major cities including Nairobi which is the capital and Nakuru which is the country’s fourth city, near the lake with which it shares a name. The first pioneers’ settling was drawn forth by the highlands’ moderate climate and fertile valleys.
