Eastern Highlands Nyika
The large and arid region, which goes up to the east of the Highlands comprises of provinces like the Eastern, Northeastern and part of the Coast province. This plateau, descending smoothly to the land that skirts the Indian Ocean, shows a smooth orography, only interfered with by isolated low hill assemblies. Their main geographical characterises are found in the region of Tsavo; they include the Taita Hills to the eat of Voi, and the Chyulu mountain range, which runs in parallel to the railroad and the main road from Nairobi to Mombasa, which are the main communication channels between the coast and the inlands.
The most part of the two main streams, Tana and Galana flows through these lands. Both of them rise in the Eastern Highlands and die in the Indian Ocean. The Galana originates by the meeting and joining of Athi and Tsavo.
The inadequate rainfall got in this region, and high temperatures are a decisive factor to the landscape, which is not inhabited and a semi desert, which bears a real desert in most of the northern areas, extending to the lands that skirt Lake Turkana. The dryness of the landscape, which is sometimes covered with impenetrable thorn bus, only gets mitigation down the fertile grounds at the edge of the river and up the grass slopes of Taita Hills.
Numerous volcanoes being present, albeit currently extinct, has left its testimony in larva currents, for example the Yatta plateau, which is the longest lava stream in the world.
