Kenya Safari Africa Park Entrance fees Increased

September 10th, 2007

The entrance to safari parks in Kenya is to be increased from 40 to 60 USD by next year 2008 and USD 100 by 2010.The Kenya wildlife Service intends to meet its expectation of raising net Sh7 billion in revenue by 2012.

Of recent there has been an increase in the prices of park entrances in the east african region. A permit to see the gorillas in Uganda was once at USd 275  about 4 years ago, now it costs USD 500 per permit. Kenya Wildlife Service used to charge USd 40 last year , and now its getting to USD 60.

The inflow of tourists to East Africa will not be affected but the price and costing of tour operators has to be done in consideration with the changes of prices over time.

Africa urged to improve flights Safety

July 16th, 2007

A five-day conference on aviation safety and security opened in Nairobi Monday with experts calling on the African governments to made improvements in this field. The 19th African Civil Aviation Commission, a specialized body of the African Union charged with the responsibility of handling civil aviation matters in the continent, is discussing challenges which hinder the development and operations of the continent’s aviation industry.

There was a growing concern internationally about the safety of civil aviation in Africa, said International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Secretary General Taleb Cherif in his opening remarks, urging the authorities to make their skies safer.

Cherif urged stakeholders in the aviation industry in Africa to collaborate and utilize their skills and knowledge in safety oversight, noting that a safe African airspace would naturally accelerate growth within the industry and lead to a reduction in the cost of doing business on the continent.

“Over the past few years, there have been numerous acknowledgements within the African aviation community on the need to improve safety and bring the accident rate in line with the world average,” said Cherif.

“A safe and secure air transport system can be a catalyst for the economic growth of nations and regions. Conversely, an air transport system that is not perceived to be safe and secure by other countries can effectively bar entry into lucrative global markets and stunt economic growth,” he said.

EU’S BLACKLIST

The ICAO chief said safety concerns prompted the European Union to place a number of African carriers on a blacklist from its airspace last year.

The ban, the EU’s first ever such blacklist, works on the principle that an airline banned in one of the bloc’s 25 member states will be outlawed by all of them.

Figures compiled by the 53-member African Union show that while Africa handles just 4 to 5 percent of the world’s air traffic, its airlines are responsible for a third of all fatal air crashes.

Kenya’s Transport Minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere said there was need for Africa to ensure provision of a safe and secure aviation environment in order to enhance the continent’s capability to compete in the global air transport industry.

Mwakwere said, however, that despite several constraints, air transport has steadily grown, linking most African countries to the rest of the world thus contributing to intra-African trade.

“Air transport in our continent is key to the economic growth since it is crucial to regional integrations in particular and development of Africa in general,” said the minister.

He cited financial constraints, high cost of air tickets and air connectivity as some of the challenges facing aviation industry in Africa.

“The costs of air tickets within Africa remain high thereby discouraging the promotion of tourism and trade in the continent. Some of the air services on offer are also unreliable, and the safety of our skies has remained in question,” said Mwakwere.

“All these challenges point to an urgent need for Africa to strengthen the technical and human capacities in the aviation industry.”

Kenya Economy Held Back By Lack of Online Payment Authorisation Systems

July 11th, 2007

The Government of Kenya is setting up its country forward as a venue that is open for business. It has intentions of privatising Telcom Kenya and then diverse Safaricom. Kenya has set up its own fibre project, but still, this is not enough to keep Kenya an open economy.

The country is largely dominated by international banks which control the operations and innovations. Its a pity that in one of the top travel and safari destinations in Africa, online booking is not possible. Kenya needs to be able to offer the visitors the ability to pay for flights, hotels and safaris online.

Sadly things have only advanced a little since Kenya Airways launched its very successful online payment system using a South African bank. Although many banks can issue credit cards, only a limited number can authorise transactions and they have not shown any interest in setting up the “back-end” payment authorisation systems required for online transactions.

Speaking at last week’s e-tourism conference in Mombasa, Kenya’s Tourist Trust Fund CEO Dr Dan Kagagi said that the industry and Government were lobbyingthe banking sector to allow online payments. Whereas once the credit card companies were the obstacle, the point of “no change” has moved to being the banks. According to Kagagi: “Already a number of credit card companies are willing to work with us to ensure that online payments become a reality.”

More Funds Needed to Market Kenya Safaris

Kenya is one of the top safari destinations in the world and definately with the best tourist attractions in the region, but it has been found out that its losing out to its fellow African competitors, South Africa and Morocco who spend huge sums of money on marketing and promotions.

The Tourism budget of Kenya is low compares to the close competitors. Consider Morocco whish used Sh40 billiion, South Africa, 4.3billion and then Kenya which spends 359.6 million to market the country. In fact South Africa marketed its destination locally and thats why 17,000 Kenyan visitors made it to South Africa./
In 2005, Kenya spent Sh359.6 million to market the country, while Morocco used Sh40 billion and South Africa Sh4.3 billion. In fact, South Africa has successfully advertised its attractions locally recording 17,000 Kenyan visitors last year.
Last year, 1.6 million tourists arrived in the country. From January through April, international tourist arrivals worldwide rose by over six per cent to 252 million, 15 million more than the same period in 2006, according World Tourism Organisation (WTO).

African Safari Peak Season once again!

June 22nd, 2007

Its peak season in Africa as many tourists flock to various wildlife parks in different countries to see a variety of game and other attractions in the National Parks.

A safari to Kenya becomes popular with the Masai Mara safari where the migration is said to be on right now, an  event which normally begins in late June and ends in early July. The troupes from the south then meet here another migratory contingent; the resident wildebeest herds of the Mara region. These animals that add up to 100,000, stay in the Loita plains and Hills, northeast of the Mara, not until they move on to look for the evergreen Mara basin, after the dry season bringing them the tougher days.

When you to chose to travel to Uganda where gorilla trekking is the major activity, permits are said to have been fully booked for the month of July, yet with an increment up to USD 500 per permit. Other safaris include visiting queen elizabeth, murchison falls and more safaris to Uganda.

Tanzania, the story is the same, the migration of the animals in Serengeti is connected to that of the Masai mara in Kenya. The story goes on and on… in Rwanda, Bostwana, South Africa and other safari destinations in Africa which you can tour.
Its it therefore important to notice that as you prepare for your vacation or holiday, you dont miss out on the great attractions that Africa has to offer.
Its Holiday time for you to go to Africa!

Cockpit for Crashed Kenya Airways leaves for Canada

June 19th, 2007

After one month since the crash of Kenya Airways which took the lives of all the 114 on board, the Cockpit voice recorder has been discovered.

The Cockpit  leaves for Canada this evening for transcription by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada. The team will include 2 Cameroonians from the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority and Captain George Muli of Kenya Airways will accompany it from Cameroon. This team departs Douala for Canada via Paris Charles De Gaule today and is expected in Canada by tuesday evening.

Officials hope that this recorder may shed light on the cause of the crash of the Boeing 737-800 which took the lives of  all 114 people from at least 26 nations on board on May 5.

The KQ plane came down shortly after taking off in heavy rain from Douala en route to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders, also known as black boxes, contain a wide variety of information, including speed and altitude as well as cockpit voice communications.
