Lake Baringo Wildlife Safari

LAKE BARINGO: WILDLIFE:
At Baringo, birds are the kings and queens. Over 400 registered groups come to the lakeside a competition to get the biggest numbers of species seen, the world record set at 342 species in one day.
The experience is more interesting during the rainy season, for it is the time when a big number of birds fly back to Baringo. If you are not an experienced ornithologist, you will love it in whatever case with a nice field ranger in your backpack and making an answer to the songs you listen to.

Gibraltar island, at the eastern ground at the edge of the lake, welcomes the largest Goliath heronry in the whole of East Africa, while the escarpment near the west land that skirts the lake is the area for viewing, with quite some luck, verreaux eagles, Hemprich’s hornbills and bristle-crowned starlings. Among the various birds habiting the lakeside acacias, you will get many beautiful starling species, and also grey-headed silverbill, grey-headed bush shrike, curly-crested helmet shrike, silverbird, West Nile red bishop and northern masked weaver.

Apart from the herons, water birds are represented by the fish eagles, hanging over the fresh fish used as food to entice the prey, by local fishermen, cormorants, pelicans and even a few flamingos from the neighbouring salty lake Bogoria.

Right south of Lake Baringo club, moving on the road, there is a length in which you can get scarce groups for example, the male paradise flycatcher in its white phase, the violet wood hoopoe, the grey-headed bush strike and many kingfisher groups.
In this region, it is easy to view hippos grazing.

From Lake Baringo club, you can join bird walks with the accompaniment of the resident ornithologist. Moves at 7:00am are led along a region near the highway, at the foot of the cliffs habited by baboons and hyrax. Here you will get a multiple of hornbills, among them are; Hemprich’s, may be a verreaux eagle, and the large Hamerkopnest, an engineering piece made up of wooden sticks next to the water and with an entrance at the side.
There is another walk, this time by the lakeside, at 5:00pm
