Kenya is the best tourist destination anyone can think of visiting in Africa. When it concerns planning for a family holiday, Kenya is the best. All you must do at first is to get the best knowledge about the best attractions to visit as well as accommodation that will suit your budget. There are so many tours and travel companies that offer family holidays although you must book in time to avoid inconveniences, you just do some research on the internet to enable you get the most reliable company to work with. If you are a kind that loves booking a hotel early, travel companies in Kenya can do this best to your preference or taste.

Kenya is well known for its coastal area as it’s the best spot for holidays. This attracts big numbers of people and the majorities are children because they have various activities to engage in and these include visiting the parks, reserves, sandy beaches, water sport games like scuba diving, kayaking, snorkeling and many others. If you are to visit Mombasa, you will get an opportunity of having a holiday offer that involves game watching adjacent to the huge Tsavo National Park. The park is a habitat to many wildlife and the most common include the big five animals and others. A family holiday in Kenya will give you a chance to visit the Mzima springs that have a beautiful view of the gushing waters surrounded by big trees, green vegetation that give an amazing view of the rainbow in the clouds.

Tsavo has the best accommodation and this ranges from luxurious hotels, camps, guest houses and lodges that favor a family holiday. Once you are at the coast, your kids will love to visit the Halle’s park that is specifically designed for them. The big secret about this park is the old tortoise called Mzee that was used in movie and written about in many story books. The giraffe is a calm animal and so children get a chance to feed them as it’s the only park that offers that to kids.

The major activity done at the coast is water sports for instance snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving and many others. Children will learn a lot if given a chance to visit the Ancient Fort Jesus, it’s a common topic in history and so they must be familiar with the information provided. The Kenya coast is one of its kind and the best for a Kenya family holiday, the experience is for a lifetime.
A holiday safari in Kenya will not live the same person; this is because the memories will be unforgettable. The most exciting thing about this country is that it has many tourist attractions to visit and sites which can be found in Kenya. As you take an evening walk around the park, you come across people of different cultures who will entertain you and make your trip exiciting.Accommodation ranges from luxurious hotels, lodges and camps with better services and facilities. You will make your choice depending on what you most.

Truth be told, if you took a holiday to Kenya and intentionally missed out on visiting the Indian Ocean beaches at the coast of Mombasa, you may not have a lot of exciting information to tell the people back home. Since it’s a coastline, there are several sandy beaches to visit for instance Kilifi, Shimoni, Malindi, Diani and Lamu. Beaches are found on the island which means you will take a boat or airplane to get there. As you sunbath at the beach, you may decide to engage yourself in water sport activities which will make your holiday memorable. Marine cuisine will be the best dish to have at the beach. If you decide to visit Lamu, you will be welcomed by the local people who will still give a chance to ride on their donkeys since it’s the only means of transport used in the region.

A holiday in Kenya will give a chance to know the different cultures particularly the Masaai and Kikuyu and get to know how they live their lives and what they feed on. Some cultures live a hard life and they basically survive on God’s mercy, visiting them shows how there is still hope for the future. Besides all this, the experience is worth it.

Gedi – one of Kenya’s great unknown treasures

Gedi is one among the unexplored treasures of Kenya and is a breathe taking isolated city located in the heart of the vast Arbuko Sokoke forest. It is a very mysterious place with an archeological puzzle which has continuously provoked debates among several historians.
Today, despite the wide spread research together with the exploration made, people are still uncertain of what exactly toke place to the mysterious Gedi and all its inhabitants. The once upon a time immense civilization was very powerful and comprised of a multifaceted Swahili settlement made up of more than 2,500 people which was constructed in the thirteenth century. Today the Gedi ruins include several mansions, complex tombs & cemeteries, houses and mosques
Regardless of the complexity plus the size of this vast settlement which extends over 45 acres, this place has never been mentioned any known historical writing or home recorded history.
The adjacent Portuguese settlement located in Malindi appears to have never had any contact with, not even aware of the Gedi existence.
The town has an outward show of being a trade colony and yet considering its physical location far deep within the forest, and miles from the ocean, chances are so high that it was never a trading centre. What was Gedi trading in and with whom did it do business?
The most outstanding mystery of the Gedi settlement was the sudden and incomprehensible abandonment of this place in the seventeenth century.
The whole Gedi town was all of a sudden deserted by all its occupants living it to the forest which today only stands as a town of ruins. There aren’t any significant signs of disturbance, battle or plague that can be attributed to the sudden abandonment.
One of the recent theories claims that Gedi town was greatly threatened by the forward move of the Galla people who are an inland tribe that where years ago renowned to be very hostile during that era, and that the Gedi people fled before the arrival of the Galls.
But the local testimonial history never mentioned any such vast scale evacuation during that time. There are no written documents of the rise or abrupt fall of the people of Gedi town was ever accounted.
The eerie ruins of the town of Gedi rest in the forest that has over grown and almost consumed the entire town. They ruins had turned out to be part of the myths in the area known as the sinister lair of malevolent spirits not until archaeologists started to slowly uncover the place in the twentieth century. The pace was gazette back in 1948.
Presently, the place has a museum and professionally trained guides who take visitors all through the different parts of the ruins.
Up to today, Gedi still stands as a mysterious place that has little been visited. The once strong stone wall and the pillars, the tombs plus the wrecked mosque all rest among the forest tress. The stone floors are covered with numerous leaves and the large shrews are seen in the abandoned houses as birds together butterflies glide in the air.
Meandering around the ruins of Gedi is a wonderful way to spend your entire morning or even afternoon as you lose yourself in the mysterious secrets of Gedi.

These animals can best be seen when you follow the trail giving you an opportunity to see them feed on various reptiles like snake but under close supervision of a guide.
There are educational videos shown that emphasis the history and continuous improvement of this place. Previously being a very barren land that was severely robbed off its resources through mining of limestone, the area was later re -developed through conservation efforts and reforestation and today stands as a sanctuary for numerous wildlife species and a variety of vegetation.
Owen and Mzee
At the end of 2004 in the month of December, strong monsoon rains in Kenya cause a trivial flood in the river Sabaki north of the coast of Kenya. The increased water levels greatly affected the family of hippos that were residing near the river banks; these were washed down into the ocean.

Fortunately, the large adult hippos were able to swim back to their original territorial home, although a young calf which was less than one year old was sadly left behind in the wild open ocean.
It was the local fishermen together with the tourists that later saw the male calf weighing 270Kg or 600 pounds wallowing vulnerably offshore for some days who became concerned about the calf’s life. This calf was later salvaged by rangers from the Kenya Wildlife Service who carefully wrapped him in a fish net and carried him onto a truck, driving him to Haller Wildlife Park which is located on the outskirts of Mombasa.
This calf was later name Owen; after one of the persons that rescued him, and was finally released into a large enclosure housing 2 large tortoises plus some bushbucks.
Surprisingly, baby Owen was soon after adopted by one of the large tortoises called Mzee.
Initially, the 120 years old giant tortoise who because of his age was named Mzee; a title meaning old age, aggressively hissed at the very terrified calf but surprisingly after some few days, giant Mzee was seen sleeping and feeding together with the hippo and so much extending motherly care to the calf despite Mzee being a male tortoise.
Meanwhile, baby Owen so much treated the old giant Mzee like a parent. He was often seen not only licking Mzee’s face but also following him wherever he went.
You can always visit this unusual pair at Haller Park to have a personal view of this flourishing and still going relationship. The area has several trekking trails that have turned it into a very wonderful destination to pass your morning or even afternoon hours away from the vivid beach life.

For those who read the book or watched the movie ‘Out of Africa’ by Karen Blixen and so enjoyed them, this particular museum is a must visit destination. From 1914 to 1931, Karen Blixen was staying on the coffee estate in a home called Bongani.
This Karen Blixen Museum was established in the M’Bongani House which is the major building on the entire coffee farm of Karen Blixen just on the bottom of Ngong Hills in 1985.
Following Kenya’s independence, the house together with the adjacent land was donated to Kenya by the Danish government. The house was well reinstated and used in the filming of the movie ‘Out of Africa’ which was based on Karen’s book
Today the museum is recognized as one of the National Museums in the country and it is located just 15km on the outskirts of Nairobi city.
Currently this region has developed into a modern community ‘of Karen’ just outside the capital city Nairobi.
The house/home serves as a museum and has been well conserved in its original state for visitors to explore. For those who read the book or watched the movie which was shot in this very location, you will be able to recognize the impressive house surrounded by expansive gardens with scenic views of the adjacent Ngong Hills.
Several efforts have been put in place to decorate the different rooms in the house while maintaining their original fashion. Most of the original furniture is well displayed in the house and the original kitchen was restored with a dove stove identical to the old one plus some kitchen utensils and now is open for public viewing. In an effort to restore the place back to its ancient days, the coffee factory and the farm machinery are being reconstructed.
The Museum opens daily from 0930 to 1800 hours annually, including public holidays and weekends. It has become a center for various activities like research, private parties and visitations from all parts of the continent.
The house is furnished with a blend of interior decorations & furnishes together with props from the film production of 1985. On the ground are several displays of the farming tools and equipment that were used in the plantation.
Furthermore there is a gift shop where you can look up a souvenir to carry home after this wonderful tour of this place. This museum is an ideal place to spend your morning or afternoon while in Kenya.
There are professional and well trained staff in the museum who are very well knowledgeable about the history of this impressive house and the entire life of the author Karen Blixen. They are gladly ready and very willing to answer any questions that may arise and to personally guide you through your tours in this house.
The proceedings collected from this place are utilized in refurbishing and maintaining the Karen Blixen Museum plus the adjacent local museums.
You can readily reach the museum by taxi and bus boarding from Nairobi.

The best place to explore and learn about the history plus the culture of Kenya is Nairobi National Museum. This recently renovated museum was first established in 1929 on Museum Hill following the then government putting aside some land for its construction.
On 22nd September, 1930, the museum was then officially opened and name d Coryndon Museum in memory of the legendary Sir Robert Coryndon who was once governor of this country and a very devoted supporter of the Uganda Natural History Society.
The opening of this museum leads to the movement of the large library into this National Museum by the society.

Some of the proceeding collected made part of the foundation collection the present day Herbarium. During the early 40s and 50s, the now deceased Dr. Louis Leakey publicly appealed for financial help for enlarging the galleries of the museum.
This appeal resulted in the galleries on the right side of the main entrance that we see at present day.
These galleries were named in respect to the community members of Nairobi who generously contributed towards the construction of this museum. At present day you will find the Churchill Gallery, Mahatma Gandhi Hall and the Aga Khan in addition to others.
Back in the early 60s, Nairobi snake Park was constructed primarily to educate the entire public regarding snakes and some of the common reptiles in Kenya. Today the snake park still stands as a major educative attraction in this museum.
Coryndon Museum had its name changed in 1964 to National Museum of Kenya.
The Museum slowly by slowly started intensifying its services plus its assets starting in 1969 far beyond the capital city Nairobi and later establishes several museums in Meru, Lamu, Fort Jesus found in Mombasa, Kitale and Kisumu.
Furthermore, the renowned Institute of Primate Research is also very much connected to this great museum. Each of these smaller regional museums has its personal identity and develops its independent programs which are run directly under the Director for Regional Museums, Monuments and Sites office.
Since the ancient 1969 era, the museums have all greatly grown and broaden their horizons. In 1976, the Leakey Memorial Building was also opened and it is here that the paleontology, administration and archeology departments are found.
Additionally, the building houses a lecture hall/auditorium that has a sitting capacity of approximately 300 people and also hosts several museum events. Today, several research plus development programs have also been developed and started.
Among these programs are collaboration with the University of Nairobi plus the Institute of African Studies specialized in culture anthropology and ethnography.
Fortunately the Department of Education started up programs for hundreds and hundreds of children who annually visit the museum. In addition the department of Casting sells out casts of the very significant fossil discoveries found in the museum worldwide for exhibition and studies.
The museum is opened daily from 8:30am to 5:00pm including public holidays plus weekends. It is a perfect destination you can visit to pass your morning or afternoon as you explore and learn more about the exciting mysteries of Kenya.

Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is situated adjacent to the renowned Nairobi National Park. This orphanage of rhinos together with elephant calves from all parts of Kenya was established and is still administered by Daphne Sheldrick a widow to David Sheldrick one of the popular and best game wardens.
It should be remembered that one of the persons that spear headed the war against ivory poaching in Tsavo National Park was David Sheldrick back in the 1970s.
At present day the Sheldrick orphanage is a vital focal point for conserving elephant
The elephant calves which are majorly orphaned because of poaching are all gathered and brought in thid place. While here, they receive professional care and treatment and actually receive personal care and are monitored 24 hours in a day by dedicated caretakers who become mothers to these calves.
The young elephants are carefully fed after three hours and taken daily by their care takers to Nairobi National park so that they can interact with other species of wild animals and also to get acquitted with the behavior of elephants such as using their trunks to feed and to pick grass. After some time when the calves are no longer depending on being fed by bottle which is usually at two years old, they are transferred to Tsavo National Park where they are cautiously reintroduced into the existing wild herds.
The elephants in this orphanage are of an age range between just a few months to three years old. Each calf is assigned a personal care taker who serves as its stand-in mother until the elephant is old enough to be released into the wild. Because being orphaned is quite a distressing experience, the care taker or keeper does spend as much time as they can with the elephant especially during the very first days as they try to lavish the baby elephants. Take care of an elephant not only entails feeding it but also providing shade for it to avoid sunburns, and as it becomes older you take it for walks in the wild park.
This center is opened to public viewing each day of the week including weekends and public holidays from 11 o’clock in the morning up to 12 noon. You will be able to see these large mammals feed and the guides will give you a briefing about the life history of the animals, they will tell you where the animals came from, how they are surviving and update you of the progress of the orphans. Normally groups of about 25 – 30 people are allowed to see the animals.
The calves are exercised and well bathed while visitors are free to watch all this. This place is a good educational centre providing all general information about elephants and how to conserve them.
It is in this elephant orphanage where man’s compassion exceeds anything else, it is a destination where people dedicate themselves willingly to save these large and impressive animals. So by visiting the park you will get the opportunity to closely encounter these very large animals.
