African Rhino Safari
In Africa, there are two species of Rhinos, and these are; the Black Rhino which has Diceros bicornis as its zoological name, and the White Rhino which has Ceratotherium simum as the zoological name. However, it is important to note that both species are grey in colour and one can see them in their natural province on Safari Tours in Africa. Rhinos, which are believed to grow and weigh 2-3 tons, are the second largest land mammals that follow elephants. They have got wide mouths and 2 horns which horns have made poachers to be the main threat to Rhinos, as they continue to hunt for them in the name of getting the horns that are used in Chinese medicine.
The African Black Rhino is considered critically endangered with only 3,600 surviving in the wild. They have got two horns in a row, that is to say, a smaller one behind and
a larger one infront, plus a tick grey-black hide. They like staying in forested areas, near rivers and watering holes especially in the Eastern, Central and Southern Africa. These Black rhinos have got males which are aggressive and if provoked, they can charge.
Their calves will continue following their mothers not until they make 2 years of age. They are herbivores which spend most of their time looking for food as they enjoy eating leaves, grass and shrubs.
African White Rhino has got 2 sub-species. One of its sub-species has recovered from the brink of extinction and it regarded as a conservation success story, while another is in danger of extinction. White Rhino like staying inn South Africa though there is also a small population in Central Africa. Of its sub-species, the Southern White Rhino is protected in South Africa with more than 11,000 Rhinos, while the Northern White Rhino is so much threatened, with a round 30 surviving in Garamba National Park in Congo.
White Rhinos have also got 2 horns, which appear after a year and grow with age. The larger frontal horn, which can grow to a length of 60-150cm, is made of keratin, similar to human hair and nails. These are also herbivores that spend most of their time looking for food in terms of leaves, grass and shrubs.
Meanwhile, the White Rhinos got their name from the word ‘Weit’ which means ‘wide’ in Afrikaans, and so over a period of time, this word (weit) has been transformed to White.
Even so, it is true that these Rhinos have got wide mouths - (weit mouths).
