African Elephant Safari Kenya and Vacation

African Elephant, a highly intelligent mammal, which can communicate with one another and often travel long distances in search of food or water is the largest land animal on our planet, found in many different parts of Africa and it bears Loxodonta africana as its zoological name. The African Elephant is larger than the Asian Elephant and it has got bigger ears and tusks. Large male African elephants have been known to grow to a height of above 12 feet and weigh a round 6-10 tons. Poachers, who hunt these African Elephants for their magnificent tusks and human population, are the main threats to the elephants.
It is important to note also that there are two sub-species in which African elephants occur, and these include; one that lives in the forests of Central Africa, and the other which stays in the open savannah.

These greyish-brown animals are estimated to be around 500,000 in the wild and they are believed to spray dust over their bodies that makes them look black, white or red according to the colour of the soil. The reason for all this dust covering is to protect themselves from insects and harsh sun.

As for their habitat, African Elephants occur in two sub-species as noted earlier on-The smaller Africa Forest Elephant which resides in the rainforest in the Congo basin, and the larger African Bush Elephant, which is found in the open savannah in Eastern, Central and southern Africa. The African Elephant also likes staying in grasslands, river valleys, forests or in semi-desert areas.

These elephants, which are known to be herbivores, need to have large amounts of food such that they maintain their bodies which are huge, because just in a day, an adult male elephant can consume more than 200 kilograms of vegetation. They spend most their time foraging for food and so they are well known to feed on grass, leaves, shrubs, fruits, the upper parts on the bark of trees, and even still standing crops especially in areas of human encroachment. They are also known for drinking large amounts of water and this they are believed to do, by sucking their trucks and spraying that water into their mouths.

Matriarch, an elderly female elephant leads the group in which African elephants live, and these elephants are said to have a possible life span of 60-70 years. Elephants are believed to be social animals that communicate using a range of sounds in which infrasound is inclusive. They have got trucks, which they use in lifting objects, smelling, drinking and greeting each other. They can very well manage to protect their young ones in the groups and here they use their tusks to ward off predators for example lions, while they have also been observed helping older or sick elephants. The family group in which the elephants live, contains a number of female elephants, some adult males and their
offspring, just lie we have mentioned above. These elephants, so playful and gregarious as they are, have excellent memories and across the countryside, they migrate annually as they keep looking for water of food.
