Aberdare Safari Kenya

Aberdare national park is found in the range of the same name, given by Joseph Thomson in 1883 while on his journey through the land of the Maasai.
Kikuyu people are still using the range’s traditional name, i.e. Nyandarua. The misty and rainy forests in the range acted as a hiding place for the Mau-Mau group of soldiers who fought against official soldiers, from 1947 to 1956. In 1950, the park was gazetted with an area of 584Km2, but was later extended to 770Km2, making Aberdare the third largest part in the whole country.

The Aberdare range, which is 160Km long, is found in the Central highlands, Central province, West of Kenya mountain and North of Nairobi, serving as the Kenyan Rift valley’s east wall. The national park has a longitudinal strip from North to South, having a projection towards the East denominated the salient, that runs down to an altitude of 2,130m, next to the town of Nyeri. The ancient movement route of elephants between the range and Kenya mountain, is the region of the salient.

Aberdare is the highest park in the whole of Africa, since most of the plateau is located above altitude of 3,000m. The summits in the park include; Kinangop, having 3,906m, and the Oldonyo lesatima, “the mountain of the young bull” in the Maa language of the Maasai, having 4,001m. The deeply poggy rainforest dominates the landscape. Tracts breed I the streams of the mountain, that burst down spectacular waterfalls, for example, Keruru kahuru of 270m and the Gura of 240m in the South area, or the Chania falls in the central sector of the park. Because of the high humidity, the tracks passing through the park are muddy for big part of the year.

Aberdare has got plenty of the botany, a mixture of equatorial exuberance together with alpine vegetation. Over the 2,000m level, bamboo jungles are given way by the rain forest, and at 3,000m, they become mountain prairies where grounded and giant lobelias grow high.

Even if the park receives tourists in a flux, a big number of them only do it for a night stay at its famous lodges, a clear reason why the park is greatly not known to many of the tourists.
